Friday Notes

  • Week one is over and done and what a week it was! Overall, it was a great first week and it seems like most everyone is happy to be back. ☺
  • Parents of kindergarten – 5th grade will be getting an email from Mrs. Hein with the Bible Passage Memory work books attached. If you don’t know what those are, the email will explain. In regard to the memory work that we do here at Grace: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6) Often times, parents and students alike will ask, “Why do we have to memorize so much!?” Committing Bible passages, doctrinally sound hymns, and catechism chief parts to memory is a great way to keep God’s promises in mind when hard times come. When we are tempted by sin, when we are feeling down or lonely, when questioning why we believe what we believe, or even when we are feeling upbeat and cheerful, we can recall God’s words committed to memory. Children’s brains are like sponges and with a little training, they soak these things right up. It’s much easier to memorize when we are young. Memorization is discipline for the mind. Memorization helps train the mind to focus. Children will recite memory work on Monday (the hymn), Wednesday (Bible passages), and Friday (Catechism). 6th-8th graders recite their hymn on Monday and Bible passages and Catechism chief parts on Tuesday. It’s extremely important for the students to work on their memory work every day. Find a consistent time and a place free of distraction and memorizing should be a lot easier.
